A shared grocery list app that sorts itself by aisle

HouseChief's grocery list is a shared family list that sorts itself by aisle: produce together, dairy together, frozen together. Everyone in the family adds to the same list from their own phone or the kitchen tablet, a recipe's ingredients go on in one step, and you can keep a separate list for each store. It runs in the browser on any phone and is free while in early access.

One list, sorted by aisle

Type "milk, bananas, paper towels" and each item lands in its aisle: Produce, Dairy & Eggs, Meat & Seafood, Bakery, Pantry, Frozen, Drinks, Snacks and Household, with anything unusual under Other. In the store you walk the list top to bottom instead of doubling back for the butter. If HouseChief guesses an aisle wrong, tap the item's menu to move it, or to rename it.

Add something that's already on the list and HouseChief tells you instead of adding it twice. Add something you bought last week and it simply comes back onto the list. While you shop, a counter shows how far along you are ("5 of 12 in the cart").

A list for each store

Most families shop at more than one place. Next to the main Grocery list you can make store lists, for example Costco or Target, with New list → Store grocery list. Each one sorts by aisle the same way, so the warehouse run and the weekly shop stay separate. Other checklists (packing lists, the hardware store, a party) live alongside them in Lists.

Need it on paper? Any list prints as a checklist with boxes to tick, grouped by aisle.

Shared with the whole family

The grocery list belongs to the household, not to one phone. Sam adds bread from the office while Jordan is already in the store, and it's there the next time Jordan's list loads. Items checked off in the aisle are checked off for both of you. Kids can add to the shared lists and tick items too, from their own view or the kitchen tablet, with no email or password.

The wall display shows what's still on the grocery list along the bottom of the screen, so whoever opens the fridge and finds no milk can see whether it's already on there. Parents can also keep private lists, handy for birthday presents, that kids never see.

From recipes and meal plans

Every recipe in the recipe box holds its ingredients, and one step sends them to the grocery list, already sorted. Plan Tuesday's chili on the week grid and the shopping for it is one tap away. See meal planning for the week grid and recipe box, or the weekly meal planning guide for a 20-minute Sunday routine.

Add items by voice, chat or email

  • Ask your Chief of Staff. Say or type "add paper towels and eggs" and they go straight on the list, with an Undo button. "Add paper towels to Costco" puts them on that store list.
  • Quick add. Type a note like "we need milk and eggs, tacos Friday", or snap a photo of a recipe or a party supply list, and the items arrive in your Inbox to approve.
  • Forward an email. Groceries mentioned in a forwarded email (the team snack schedule, a class party sign-up) land in the Inbox for a parent to approve. See email to calendar.
  • Your own Claude or ChatGPT. If you connect your own assistant, it can add items to the grocery list too. See HouseChief with Claude and ChatGPT.

Send it to an Amazon cart

For the things you'd rather have delivered, a parent can tap Amazon on a list and pick the items to send. HouseChief looks each one up on Amazon and gives you a link that adds them to your own Amazon cart, where you check and order as usual. HouseChief never signs in to Amazon and never places an order, and it only ticks items off your list when you tap "I ordered".

There's no grocery delivery or pickup integration with supermarkets, and no price comparison. The Amazon link is a shortcut to your own cart, nothing more.

Questions

Does the grocery list sort by aisle?

Yes. HouseChief sorts each item into an aisle automatically (produce, dairy and eggs, meat and seafood, bakery, pantry, frozen, drinks, snacks, household), so you walk the store once. If an item lands in the wrong aisle, move it from the item's menu, and it stays there.

Can my partner and I share the grocery list?

Yes. The grocery list belongs to the whole household, so both parents open the same list on their own phones. Items one of you adds appear for the other when the list loads, and items checked off in the store are checked off for both. Kids can add to it too.

Can I have a separate list for each store?

Yes. Besides the main Grocery list, you can make store lists such as Costco or Target with New list, Store grocery list. Each sorts by aisle the same way, and you can tell your Chief of Staff which list to add to, for example "add paper towels to Costco".

Is there a grocery list app for the whole family that kids can use?

HouseChief is one. Kids are profiles with no email or password, so they can add to the shared grocery list and tick items from their own view or the kitchen tablet. Parents can keep private lists that kids never see. It runs in the browser and is free while in early access.

Can HouseChief order my groceries?

No. HouseChief doesn't place orders or connect to supermarket delivery. For things you buy on Amazon, a parent can send list items to an Amazon cart link and then review and order on Amazon themselves; HouseChief never signs in to Amazon or orders for you.
