A Cozi alternative with two-way sync and a chief of staff

HouseChief is a Cozi alternative for families who want two-way Google Calendar, iCloud and Outlook sync, chores with stars and rewards for kids, and an AI Chief of Staff that asks before it changes anything, with no ads. Cozi is the better fit if you want native iPhone and Android apps or a long-established free plan with a simple shared calendar and lists. This comparison uses Cozi's own published pages as of October 2026; HouseChief is free while in early access.

The short answer

Both are family organizers with a shared calendar, lists and recipes. The differences, as of October 2026, are in how calendars connect, what's there for kids, how AI is used and how each is paid for.

  • Calendar sync: HouseChief syncs two ways with Google Calendar, iCloud and Outlook. Cozi's FAQ describes a read-only integration with Google, Outlook and Apple calendars and iCal links, plus a read-only feed out of Cozi.
  • Kids: HouseChief has chores with stars, streaks, rotations and a parent-approved rewards store. Cozi has per-person chore lists with repeats in its mobile apps; stars and rewards aren't described on Cozi's pages.
  • AI: HouseChief has an AI Chief of Staff that proposes changes for a parent to approve. Cozi's Max plan includes AI Event Import, an AI Recipe Creator and an AI Meal Planner.
  • Price and ads: HouseChief is free while in early access, with no ads. Cozi's free plan is supported by ads; Gold ($39/year) removes them, and Max ($79.99/year) adds the AI features.
  • Apps: Cozi has iOS and Android apps. HouseChief is a web app you add to your Home Screen; there is no App Store or Google Play app.

Calendar sync

This is the biggest practical difference for a household split between Google, iPhone and Outlook. In HouseChief each parent connects their own Google, iCloud or Outlook calendar and the sync runs both ways: events from the calendars you choose appear in HouseChief, and events made in HouseChief are copied to the calendar you pick, so they show up in Google Calendar, the iPhone calendar or Outlook as ordinary events. (Some work Outlook accounts need IT approval first.) Any other calendar (school, team) can be added read-only by its ICS link, and HouseChief's own events can be subscribed to from Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook, view-only. More on the family calendar page.

Cozi's FAQ describes its calendar integration with Google, Outlook and Apple Calendar as read-only: outside calendars show in Cozi, and Cozi can publish a read-only feed out to other calendar programs. Cozi says it checks incoming iCal URLs about once an hour. Two-way sync isn't described on Cozi's pages. If your family's calendar already lives entirely in Cozi and you don't need edits to flow both ways, that model may be all you need.

Meals and grocery lists

HouseChief has a week grid for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, a recipe box with categories, and a grocery list that sorts itself by aisle. A recipe's ingredients go to the list in one step, meals can repeat weekly, and you can keep separate lists per store. The Chief of Staff can draft the week for you to approve. See meal planning.

Cozi's free plan includes shared grocery and to-do lists and a recipe library; Gold adds Shopping Mode, and Max adds an AI Meal Planner and AI Recipe Creator, according to Cozi's plan comparison. Cozi's Recipe Box also lets you schedule meals onto the calendar.

Chores and kids

In HouseChief, kids are profiles with no email or password. Each has their own view with today's chores, which earn stars and build streaks; chores can go to one kid, to anyone, or rotate between siblings; and a rewards store lets kids spend stars on things a parent approves. A parent PIN keeps kids out of parent views, and a tablet on the wall shows every kid's chore column. See chores and rewards.

Cozi added a Chores feature in 2025: each family member gets a chore list in the Cozi iOS and Android apps, with daily or weekly repeats. Cozi's pages don't describe stars, streaks or a rewards store, as of October 2026. For a family that wants simple chore lists without points, that may be all you need.

AI help

HouseChief's AI Chief of Staff knows your family's calendar, meals, recipes and lists, writes a morning briefing, turns forwarded school emails and flyers into Inbox items, drafts meal plans and projects, and can run errands in a browser you watch. Calendar and meal changes, emails, projects and website submits all wait for a parent's Approve. It's included while in early access.

Cozi's AI features (AI Event Import from emails, AI Recipe Creator and AI Meal Planner) are part of the Max plan at $79.99/year, per Cozi's plan pages. Cozi says the AI features are in its mobile apps, not the website. If what you want is specifically importing events from emails or flyer photos and generating recipes inside a familiar app, Cozi Max does that.

Price

HouseChief is free while in early access; pricing will be announced before any charge. It has no ads. Cozi, as of October 2026: Free ($0, supported by ads and sponsors), Gold ($39/year, which removes ads and adds the mobile month view, calendar search, up to three reminders per event, change notifications, a birthday tracker, Shopping Mode and VIP customer support) and Max ($79.99/year, which adds the AI features). One Cozi subscription covers the whole family account.

Which one fits your family

Cozi is likely the better fit if you:

  • Want a native app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Already run the family on Cozi and are happy with its read-only calendar integration.
  • Prefer a long-established product with a straightforward paid tier.

HouseChief is likely the better fit if you:

  • Have one parent on Google and one on iPhone and want edits to flow both ways.
  • Want chores with stars, streaks, rotations and rewards for kids who have no accounts.
  • Want an assistant that drafts the week, meals and projects, with you approving each change before it happens.
  • Want no ads and a tablet-on-the-wall display without buying a device.

Switching from Cozi

HouseChief has no importer for Cozi (or any other app), so there's no one-click move. Two practical routes: if your calendar also lives in Google, iCloud or Outlook, connect that to HouseChief and it syncs in. Otherwise, Cozi's FAQ says you can set up a read-only feed of appointments from Cozi; add that feed's link to HouseChief as an ICS feed and your Cozi events show up read-only while you transition. Lists and recipes are quick to re-enter, or ask your Chief of Staff to add a pasted list for you. Our calendar setup guide covers the Google, iCloud and Outlook side.

Questions

Is there a free alternative to Cozi?

HouseChief is free while in early access, with no ads; pricing will be announced before any charge. Cozi also has a free plan, supported by ads, with paid Gold and Max tiers. The differences are in two-way calendar sync, chores and rewards for kids, and how AI help works, all compared above as of October 2026.

Does HouseChief sync with Google Calendar both ways?

Yes. Each parent connects their Google account, chooses which Google calendars to show, and events created in HouseChief are pushed back to Google. iCloud and Outlook work the same way. Cozi's FAQ describes its Google, Outlook and Apple calendar integration as read-only, with a read-only feed out of Cozi.

Can I move my Cozi calendar to HouseChief?

Not with an importer; HouseChief doesn't have one. If the same events are in Google Calendar, iCloud or Outlook, connect that and they sync in. Otherwise set up Cozi's read-only outbound feed and add its link to HouseChief as an ICS feed, so your Cozi events show while you move over. Lists and recipes are re-entered by hand.

Does HouseChief have ads?

No. HouseChief has no ads, no ad or analytics trackers, and never sells family data. Cozi's FAQ says its free version is supported by ads and sponsors; Cozi Gold and Max remove the ads, as of October 2026.

Which one has an AI assistant?

Both have AI, differently. HouseChief has an AI Chief of Staff that answers questions, writes a morning briefing, drafts meals and projects and proposes changes that wait for a parent's Approve; it's included in early access. Cozi's Max plan ($79.99/year) includes AI Event Import, AI Recipe Creator and AI Meal Planner.
