Chores
Chore rewards that work: stars, streaks and a family reward store
Chore rewards work when a kid can mark the chart and the prize is something they want that is not cash. In HouseChief, kids use their own view with no email or password, chores earn stars, a missed due day resets that chore's streak, and a parent approves each reward. Stars are points, not money.
Kids use a view, not an account
A chore chart fails when the only person who can mark it is the parent, because then the chart is a nag. Kids need to tap their own jobs. They do not need an email address, a password, or a phone plan to do that.
In HouseChief, a parent adds a kid with a name, a color and an emoji. Any signed-in device can switch to that kid's view. The kid sees their chores for today and the to-dos assigned to them. They do not see private lists, settings, or the Inbox, and they cannot change events or rewards. A parent PIN stops the view from switching back to a parent. The kids page is the full version of that rule. There is not a separate "kids with no email" article yet. Chores by age is the nearest guide, and it uses the same rule.
Stars and streaks
Each chore can earn stars when it is checked off for today. Stars sit in a balance until they are spent. A streak is the run of due days in a row that chore was done, counting back from today (or from yesterday, if today is not done yet). Miss a due day and that chore's streak goes back to zero. Stars already earned stay. A missed day cannot be filled in later, because kids tick today only.
Keep the list short enough that a streak is possible. Two or three daily jobs a kid can finish beat eight that collapse on Wednesday. Rotate the unpopular jobs so one sibling is not stuck with the trash forever. A chore can also be "anyone," so the first kid to do it gets it, which works for a job that just needs doing. The age-by-age list, with sources, is in chores by age.
Praise the streak you can see, and do not compare siblings. One kid's five-day run is not a score against the other. If a streak resets, the next due day is a fresh start, not a lecture. The chart is there so the kid can tell what "done" looks like without asking.
A reward store that is not an allowance
HouseChief does not pay kids and it does not move money. Stars are points. You decide what they buy. A parent approves each reward, and the stars are held until you do, so a kid cannot empty the balance while you are in the other room.
Prizes that are not cash tend to last longer than a dollar, because the dollar gets compared with every other dollar. A few that families actually use:
- Choose dinner one night this week.
- An extra story, or picking the book.
- A later bedtime on Friday, by a set number of minutes you already decided.
- Pick the Saturday movie, or the park, or who they invite.
- A small outing you were going to do anyway, so the reward is the choice, not a new bill.
Put the price in stars where the kid can see it before they do the work. If the prize costs more stars than a week can earn, it is a savings goal, not a surprise. You can ignore the store and still use stars as a tally. The store is optional.
Where the chart should live
A chart in a parent's phone is invisible at 7:15 a.m. The wall display shows each kid's chores in a column, with today's schedule and dinner, on a tablet you already own. Checking off a chore can earn a short cheer. The kid's view on a parent's phone works the same way when you are not in the kitchen.
Questions
Do kids need an email address to use the chore chart?
No. Kids use their own view without email or password. A parent adds them with a name, a color and an emoji, and a parent PIN protects settings so a kid cannot switch into a parent's view. The FAQ is the short version.
What happens to a streak if they miss a day?
That chore's streak resets to zero. Stars already earned stay in the balance, and nothing is taken off for the miss. The chore shows up again the next time it is due. Kids can only check off today, so a missed day cannot be backfilled later.
Should I pay cash for chores?
HouseChief does not do allowance or payments. Stars are points, and you choose the rewards. Many families use choices (dinner, a story, a Friday bedtime) instead of cash, so the prize is not competing with pocket money. A parent approves every reward from the store.
