Connect your assistant

Use HouseChief from Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants

If you already use Claude or ChatGPT, you can connect it to HouseChief as a custom connector. Your assistant can then look up the family calendar, meals, chores, lists and to-dos, add items to a list, and send things to your Inbox for a parent to approve, and nothing more. Setup takes a couple of minutes from Settings → AI assistants, and HouseChief is free while in early access.

What your assistant can do

Once connected, your assistant works inside your family's HouseChief as you, a parent. It can answer "what's on our calendar this week?" or "what's for dinner Thursday?" from the real data, and it can help with small, reversible additions. It has seven tools:

  • Calendar: events between two dates (the next seven days if you don't say).
  • Meals: planned breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks.
  • Chores: who has which chore on a day, and whether it's done.
  • Lists: the family's lists and what's still unchecked on them.
  • To-dos: open to-dos with due dates, owners and priority, for one person or everyone.
  • Add to a list: puts items straight on a list such as Grocery or To-do, skipping anything already there. To-dos can carry a due date, an owner and a priority.
  • Send to the Inbox: hands free text ("soccer Tuesdays at 5 for Leo, taco night Friday") to HouseChief, which turns it into events, chores, list items or meals that wait in the Inbox until a parent taps Approve.

What it can't do

The connector is deliberately small. Your assistant can't edit or delete calendar events, change the meal plan directly, remove list items, send email, change settings, or see your Chief of Staff chats. Anything bigger than adding to a list goes through the Inbox, where a parent approves it in HouseChief. Only parents can connect an assistant; kids can't.

This is separate from HouseChief's own AI Chief of Staff, which lives inside the app and also asks before it changes anything. You don't need an outside assistant to use HouseChief; the connector is for families who already spend their day in one.

How to connect it

  1. Copy the connector address

In HouseChief, open Settings → AI assistants and tap Copy next to the address. It's https://housechief.app/api/mcp.

  2. Add a custom connector in your assistant

In Claude, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Connectors (custom connectors use developer mode). Paste the address. Other assistants that support custom MCP connectors work the same way.

  3. Sign in to HouseChief

Your assistant opens HouseChief's sign-in page. Sign in as a parent, the same way you sign in to HouseChief.

  4. Tap Allow

HouseChief asks whether to allow that assistant to use HouseChief. Tap Allow. The assistant now shows up under Settings → AI assistants with the date you connected it.

  5. Ask something

Try "What's on the HouseChief calendar this weekend?" or "Add eggs and paper towels to our HouseChief grocery list."

Menu names in Claude and ChatGPT change from time to time, and some plans may not offer custom connectors. If you can't find the option, check your assistant's help pages for "custom connectors".

Disconnecting and privacy

Settings → AI assistants lists every assistant you've connected. Tap Disconnect and it stops working right away; you can connect it again later. Each parent connects their own assistant.

When you ask your assistant about your family, the answers it gets from HouseChief go to that assistant, and what it does with them is covered by its own terms and settings. HouseChief's side is in the privacy summary, and privacy and safety explains how HouseChief keeps family data to your household.

Questions

Can I use HouseChief with Claude?

Yes. Add HouseChief as a custom connector in Claude (Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector) with the address https://housechief.app/api/mcp, sign in as a parent and tap Allow. Claude can then read your family's calendar, meals, chores, lists and to-dos and add items to a list or the Inbox.

Does HouseChief work with ChatGPT?

Yes, as a custom connector. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors (custom connectors use developer mode), add https://housechief.app/api/mcp, then sign in to HouseChief as a parent and tap Allow. ChatGPT can then look things up and add to your lists or Inbox, nothing more.

Can my AI assistant change our family calendar?

Not directly. A connected assistant can read the calendar, but new events go to the HouseChief Inbox and wait for a parent to approve them. It can't edit or delete events, send email or change settings. The only thing it adds directly is items on a list, such as the grocery list.

Do I need Claude or ChatGPT to use HouseChief?

No. HouseChief has its own AI Chief of Staff built in, and everything works without an outside assistant. The connector is an extra for families who already use Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant and want to reach their family calendar and lists from there.

How do I disconnect an AI assistant?

In HouseChief, open Settings → AI assistants and tap Disconnect next to the assistant. It stops working right away. You can also remove the connector inside Claude or ChatGPT, and you can connect it again any time with the same address.
